Moving Out During a Dublin Home Renovation: What to Arrange Before Work Starts

Moving out for a renovation means organising two things at once: the work at your own house and daily life somewhere else. Getting a few practical arrangements in place before the builders arrive makes that change much easier.

This guide is about the move itself: agreeing dates, packing, storage, deliveries and returning home. If you are ready to choose a place to stay, explore our furnished renovation accommodation in Dublin.

Agree the move-out date before booking the move

The first day of building work is not always the day you need to leave. Ask your builder when the work will affect the kitchen, bathroom, heating, electricity or safe access through the house. That conversation gives you a more useful starting point than an estimated overall project length.

Put the practical dates together: the builder’s access date, your removal or storage booking, and check-in at your temporary home. Allow time to clear the rooms the team needs before work starts. If you are staying in the house for an initial phase, agree how the occupied space will be separated from the work and when you will move out.

Keep one written schedule that both your household and builder can refer to. It does not need to be elaborate: key dates, the next decision due and the person responsible are enough.

Pack for living, not for a holiday

A temporary move is easier when the things you use every day travel with you and the rest can stay packed. Before the removal team arrives, separate your belongings into three groups:

  • Take to your temporary home: clothes for the coming season, school uniforms, work equipment, chargers, medicines, important documents and a few familiar things for children.
  • Put into storage: furniture, boxed household contents and items you will not need during the works. Label boxes by room and keep a simple list of what is inside.
  • Keep available for the project: agreed samples, drawings and anything the builder needs access to. Decide where these will be kept rather than leaving them among your packed belongings.

Pack a first-night bag separately, with toiletries, fresh clothes, essential chargers and breakfast basics. It saves opening several boxes after a long moving day. For a furnished stay, check the supplied equipment before packing bulky kitchen items or bedding.

Choose a temporary home that supports ordinary days

During a renovation you still need to make dinner, wash clothes, get to work and have somewhere comfortable to spend the evening. Start with the number of bedrooms your household needs, then look at the kitchen, laundry facilities and living space.

Sandford Gardens is our three-bedroom Dublin 8 home for up to five guests. Its open-plan living, kitchen and dining area gives everyone space to spend time together, with separate bedrooms, fast Wi-Fi and an outdoor area. It is a practical option for a household moving out while work is underway.

Keep the journeys you already know manageable

Write down the places you will still visit most often: school, childcare, work and your own house. Compare the temporary address with those journeys before choosing a home. A familiar school run or a straightforward trip back to meet the builder can make a real difference over several weeks.

You do not need to recreate every detail of home. Prioritise the journeys that happen every day, then work out groceries, deliveries and other errands around your temporary base. Our two-bedroom homes in Ranelagh and Donnybrook offer further options on Dublin’s south side.

Arrange access, deliveries and decisions at your own house

Agree who holds keys and who will be on site to receive materials. Give suppliers the correct delivery contact rather than assuming you or the builder will always be there. If an item needs your approval before installation, put that decision into the schedule.

Arrange visits with the builder so you can see progress without arriving during work that makes access unsuitable. Keep a shared list of questions and decisions; a planned conversation is usually more useful than several separate calls.

Update everyday delivery addresses for the period you are away. For post still arriving at your house, decide whether it will be collected or redirected. Keep essential documents with you rather than in a box you cannot easily reach.

Check the house is ready before arranging the return move

A predicted finish date helps with planning, but it is not the same as confirmation that you can move back in. Before booking the return removal, agree with your builder what will be complete and what, if anything, will remain to be done.

  • Confirm safe access and that the spaces you will use are ready for occupation.
  • Check that the kitchen, bathroom, heating, hot water and essential services are usable.
  • Arrange the cleaning needed before furniture and belongings come back.
  • Agree how any remaining work or snagging will be handled after the move.

If the programme changes, contact us early about your accommodation. Extensions depend on availability and the agreed booking terms, so keep us updated before your confirmed departure date.
