Google's European headquarters on Barrow Street, Meta on Grand Canal Square before its move to Ballsbridge, LinkedIn on Wilton Place, Airbnb at the Watermarque Building, Stripe at One Building on Lower Grand Canal Street, Salesforce Tower across the Liffey at Spencer Dock — the "Silicon Docks" nickname stuck because it earned it. What and where the Silicon Docks actually are
Grand Canal Dock is a Victorian dock basin at the south-eastern corner of Dublin 2, where the Grand Canal meets the Liffey. The tech quarter wraps around it: Barrow Street and Grand Canal Quay on the west side, Grand Canal Square and Misery Hill at the centre, Sir John Rogerson's Quay along the river, and Boland's Quay — the redeveloped mill complex — filling in the southern edge. Across the Samuel Beckett Bridge, Spencer Dock and the IFSC continue the corridor on the north side of the river.
Two things surprise first-time arrivals. First, it's small — you can walk the whole district in fifteen minutes. Second, it sits directly beside the Georgian city: St Stephen's Green is twenty minutes on foot, Merrion Square fifteen. You are not choosing between a tech campus and a capital city; here they're the same place.
Where to stay: the honest geography
Purpose-built accommodation inside the dock itself is scarce and hotel-priced. The smarter play for a stay of two weeks or more is the western half of Dublin 2, where the housing stock is better and the walk to the dock is still comfortable:

The commute, in real numbers
- On foot: most of Dublin 2 is 15–30 minutes from the dock. Dubliners walk; your colleagues will too.
- Dublin Bikes: the public bike scheme is the local cheat code — stations at Barrow Street, Grand Canal Square, Pearse Street and along the canal. An annual card costs less than two taxi rides.
- DART: Grand Canal Dock station sits on Barrow Street itself. Two minutes to Pearse (Trinity), and the southbound line serves coastal towns if you fancy living by the sea later in a longer assignment.
- Luas & buses: the Green Line runs along the western edge of Dublin 2 (Dawson, St Stephen's Green); cross-city buses cover everything else. From the airport, Aircoach and Dublin Express drop within walking distance of all our D2 properties — around 30–40 minutes outside rush hour.
The working day
Coffee is a competitive sport here. 3fe on Grand Canal Street Lower is one of the city's original specialty roasters and the default first meeting spot. Cloud Picker at Boland's Quay roasts on site. Il Valentino, the Italian bakery on Grand Canal Quay, does the pastries the whole dock queues for.
Remote-work-friendly spots matter even for office-based assignments — Dublin's hybrid culture is real. Evenings at the dock: the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre anchors Grand Canal Square with West End touring productions and concerts; The Marker Hotel's rooftop bar has the best view of the basin. For pints with colleagues, The Barge and The Portobello along the canal towpath are the after-work institutions, and Slattery's on Grand Canal Street is the local for match days.
Training: the dock is well served — gyms cluster around Barrow Street and Boland's Quay, there's year-round kayaking and wakeboarding on the basin itself (Surfdock and City Kayaking run evening sessions), and the canal towpath is the flattest running route in Dublin. Green space: the towpath west toward Portobello is the classic evening walk — swans, barges and Georgian terraces the whole way. Fifteen minutes further and you're at the Iveagh Gardens, the city's quietest park.
